Securing corporate sponsorship is a great way of funding your education. Around 20% of our MBA and other distance learning courses’ students are either fully or partially funded by their employers.
Below are some suggestions to consider whilst pursuing corporate sponsorship for distance learning:
- Find out if your company has a learning & development policy in place which may outline steps/criteria you need to fulfil.
- If you company has a Management Development Programme find out what you would need to do to get on it.
- Unless you have already obtained your organizations agreement, highlight your desire to complete an educational programme during your annual appraisal and ask if it can be added to your personal development plan.
- Ensure that as well as your line manager, you involve the other decision-makers so that they are fully aware of all aspects of your business case.
- Try whenever possible to do it face to face. An email or letter can give the sponsor time to delay the discussion.
- You business case needs to detail the benefits of doing a programme for yourself and the organisation – including your ability to develop a practitioner approach whilst providing research of a commercial value to your organisation.
- Support your business case with a cost versus benefit analysis, demonstrating tangible benefits to the organisation.
- Consider carefully the contract with your company for the funding. They will naturally expect some return for their investment. Be prepared for a clause within your contract for repayment of the fees, in the case of a decision for you to leave their employment. The details of the percentage of payback need to be discussed and clarified with your management.
