University of Nottingham

Nottingham’s first civic college was opened in the city centre in 1881, four years after the foundation stone was laid by former Prime Minister, W E Gladstone. After the First World War, the college outgrew its original building and in 1928 the College moved to what is now the main campus, University Park. Initially, it was accommodated in the elegant Trent Building and was officially opened by King George V in November of that year.

Even in its early days on this site, the College attracted high profile visiting lecturers including Professor Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and H G Wells.

In 1948, the college was awarded the Royal Charter and became The University of Nottingham, now able to award degrees in its own name.

The University of Nottingham is now one of the world’s best universities, distinguished for its commitment to conventional as well as online learning and internationally renowned, world-class research. The University of Nottingham was confirmed as a world-class University in the 2008 global league tables and has 320 partners worldwide. It is ranked in the UK top 10, the European top 30 and in the top 1% of all universities worldwide. When it comes to management training courses such as MBA, the university has earned a name for itself.

The School of Education at the University of Nottingham is one of the largest and most respected education departments of any UK university, and it leads the way in research and teaching quality. It has begun offering online courses as well keeping in view requirements of today’s generation.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (International) is a part-time, distance learning programme of professional enrichment for teachers working in countries other than the UK.

The PGCE(i) is focused on the improvement of individual teaching practice through critical reflection and action research. These kind of programs enable students to compare teaching approaches in different countries.

For students whose geographical location, employment, family commitments or busy lifestyle does not allow them to attend regular on-campus classes, part-time or distance online, also called e-learning courses are an ideal solution. E-learning courses are suitable for a wide range of learning styles. Teaching is conducted through a mixture of audio-visual, written and interactive materials. There are also opportunities for online discussion and collaborative projects with tutors and other students.

Online PGCEi programs are offered through a cohort model and currently has cohorts in Nigeria, Spain, Thailand, St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Middle East.
